Regular or distance for MCom?

Many students study MCom through distance or open learning because they work, live far from a campus or need flexible timing. Distance study means self-study material, online or weekend support, assignments and exams at set times.

Regular mode

What regular study usually looks like:

  • Fixed classes and a set timetable
  • Labs, practicals and direct teacher support
  • More time commitment each day
  • Often a higher total cost, including travel and living

Distance or open mode

What distance study usually looks like, where it is available:

  • Study from home on your own schedule
  • Exams and some practicals at set dates and centres
  • Needs strong self-discipline
  • Often lower in cost, but check every fee

How to decide

Ask yourself three things: can you attend classes every day, how much self-discipline do you have, and does the job you want accept this mode. For MCom, also check the rules of the regulator or council that applies to it. Distance programmes should be approved by the right regulator, so ask for proof of approval and read the official notice.

Which students choose which mode

Some simple pointers:

  • You work full time or live far from a campus: look at distance or flexible options first, if the course allows them
  • You want labs, classes and a campus life: regular mode suits you
  • You are not sure: compare both on fee, approval and the time you really have
  • Your goal needs a licence or council registration: check the rules before choosing any mode

Questions to ask the institute

Write these down before you call:

  • Check the approval of the university or the professional body
  • Ask what software and practical work is included
  • Ask for exam dates and the complete fee in writing
  • Ask how many attempts and what rules apply to exams
  • Read the latest official notice for eligibility
